Sprint finish in Beringen on final day at Belgium Tour

Baloise Belgium Tour

The final day of racing at the Baloise Belgium Tour saw the peloton take on a predominantly flat 178 kilometre long route from Turnhout to Beringen. It was a fast start to the stage with several attacks before a five rider breakaway got clear, quickly building up an advantage of over two minutes. With all Team DSM riders in the bunch, focus remained on staying safe and saving as much energy as possible ahead of the finale.

As the kilometres ticked by the advantage to those ahead dwindled and coming into the last ten kilometres it was all back together. The team moved forward into a good position, in around the first 20 riders or so, but through the many twists and turns on the run in others moves ahead. Coming under the flamme rouge the team tried to move up into the headwind finish but were too far back in the end to compete for a top result.

Team DSM coach Luke Roberts said: “Today’s final stage saw a mostly flat day out in Belgium and one that was going to end in a sprint finish. The guys did well earlier in the day at looking after each other. Coming into the finale all was going well but then we made a mistake at a crucial moment and that cost us a chance to sprint for a result. We’ll watch back and talk about what happened and learn for the future.”
