Brilliant Team DSM display sets up Lorena Wiebes to power to Binche Chimay Binche title

Binche Chimay Binche pour Dames

Riding an open and aggressive race, Team DSM were on the attack throughout the day at Binche Chimay Binche pour Dames but with the race all back together in the finale – they delivered their strong trademark lead out to set up Lorena Wiebes perfectly.

From the flag drop it was an aggressive day out with Pfeiffer Georgi in an initial move while behind the peloton split. Proceedings calmed down before a strong counter move went which featured Francesca Barale. It looked for a while as if they would fight it out for the win but the peloton made the catch just before the cobbled drag to the finish. Executing another superb lead out Franziska Koch handed over to Georgi who kept the pace high and splintered the group – setting up Wiebes who launched a vicious sprint in the closing two hundred metres to take a dominant win – Team DSM’s Women’s program’s 28th of the season.

“It was a good race from the whole team,” smiled Wiebes at the finish. “We were sharp on the attacks and had a more open approach to things today. On the local lap we had Francesca in the break so it was a good situation for us but as it was a group of eight we would have liked more of us to be there, so we tried to jump across and did some attacks, but that didn’t work out. Some of the teams that missed it then chased the break and with around one kilometres to go everything came back together. Franzi and Pfeiffer did a super good lead out for me and brought me into the perfect position over the cobble climb. I’m really happy to finish off my last race with the team in this way; it’s a nice way to end. All of the girls did amazing today.”

Team DSM coach Bennie Lambregts added: “The team did a really good job today. Tactically we wanted to ride really open and aggressively and give everyone the chance to go for it. Francesca did really well in the front to be there and rode strongly, and was in a good position to finish the race for us. Eventually though the peloton came back and there we had our second plan to set up Lorena – which went amazingly. Everyone showed super teamwork and we did a great lead out which Lorena could finish off.”
