After yesterday’s prologue the peloton were met with the first “open road” stage of the Baloise Ladies Tour, and a predominantly flat 128 kilometre long parcours, starting and finishing in the town of Zulte. Despite some cobbles and early climbs it was a fairly controlled start to proceedings with one lone breakaway rider going clear.
All Team DSM riders remained in the bunch riding well as a group and helping to control the gap to the break. Going through the intermediate sprint the team set up Lorena Wiebes who took second place behind the lone leader and with it gained two bonus seconds. Things regrouped again and another flurry of attacks occurred with a group of three going up the road.
Once again, the team remained calm and rode at a steady tempo with Esmée Peperkamp, Francesca Barale and Léa Curinier contributing to the chase, slowly reeling in those ahead and making the catch at seven kilometres to go. Moving forward well the team were always in control, even as things became hectic in the finale. Keeping a cool head, Pfeiffer Georgi piloted Wiebes perfectly; coming to the front at the right moment and putting the power down, ensuring no other lead outs came over the top. After Georgi pulled off, Wiebes launched a powerful sprint in the final 200 metres, sitting up as she crossed the line to celebrate a brilliant team win, and as a result moves into the race lead.
