Development Team DSM got through a chaotic final on stage 2 unscathed after a large crash in the closing kilometres caused havoc in the bunch at the Circuit des Ardennes. All six riders managed to stay upright though with yesterday’s second place finisher Leon Heinschke the highest finisher in 15th.
The stage was led for the most part by a breakaway of five riders who spent much of the 186.9 kilometre stage with a sustained chase seeing the final escapee being caught with less than 15 kilometres to race. During the chase behind there were points the team had to be on their toes with splits in the peloton at times but riding together and being attentive saw the guys safely in contention coming into the finale.
A large crash inside the last four kilometres saw many riders hit come unstuck before the finish but fortunately none of the Development Team DSM riders were involved, albeit hampered in their efforts before the sprint finish. Coming through the chaos to sprint at the end, Heinschke crossed the line in the top 15, maintaining his second place overall. The team can now focus on tomorrow’s test, the 172.4 kilometre queen stage between Chooz and Hargnies.
