Leon Heinschke 20th on queen stage of Circuit des Ardennes

Circuit des Ardennes

Sitting second overall heading into the queen stage, Leon Heinschke raced to 20th place on day three of Circuit des Ardennes, sliding back one place overall to third at the end of the day.

It was a fast attacking start to the 167 kilometre stage before a break of eight formed after 10 kilometres. Their gap grew to four minutes 15 second before gradually being closed down by peloton. The attacks started early from behind with Development Team DSM getting in the mix with firstly Leo Hayter trying hard to break clear but eventually closed down.

The attacks served to shave more time off the leaders’ advantage and on the final laps the race was back together but with a much reduced peloton. There were still four of the guys in the lead group at the finish behind one rider, Daniel Turek, who went clear in the final kilometres and stayed away to take the stage win.

Heinschke retains a podium placing overall as well as the jersey of best young rider heading into tomorrow’s final stage.

Team DSM Coach Bennie Lambregts said after the stage: “Today was on paper the queen stage of the race but it’s also up to the peloton to make the race. The leader’s team did a really good job to control the race for a long period behind the break of eight riders.

“We started trying to attack from 80 kilometres out with Leo Hayter but eyes were on us as a team and we couldn’t get away. On the final laps there were riders going out the back leaving around 30 to 35 riders at the finish. One rider escaped and held on to take the stage,. Behind we had four guys in the front peloton. The guys did show today that they are on a really high level and raced well. Leon is still in the best young rider’s jersey and in the top three overall so now we look to tomorrow.
