Leon Heinschke third on the final day securing second on GC

Circuit des Ardennes

Leon Heinschke raced to third place on the final stage of the Circuit des Ardennes moving back up one spot on GC to claim second place as well as winning the points classification and the jersey of the best young rider.

The final stage featured a break of just three riders that was kept in check by the peloton which saw multiple attacks through the stage. The guys worked hard to protect Leon and ensure that he came into the final in a good position.

With the race all back together in the final kilometres a bunch sprint opened up where Heinschke finished strongly to take third with teammate Tim Naberman also finishing in the top 10, in ninth.

“Today the jumping part took a bit longer and the team protected me there really well and closed gaps when needed so that I could fully focus on the bonus sprints and the final,” explained Heinschke after the race. “In the end it was a technical sprint where positioning was really important, so we focused on being in a great position towards the last two kilometres where Tim positioned me really well. I went all out to the line to get some seconds and also move up one spot in GC again.

“In my opinion we had a really strong team here and the guys protected me every day really well which helped me a lot.”

Team DSM coach Bennie Lambregts also commented: “We finally moved up in the GC with Leon today when he took third in the bunch sprint taking the three bonus seconds he needed to move back into second. He also takes the best young rider’s jersey and wins the points classification too so it’s a nice result.

“I can say that the whole team gave their best today. With this young team we had a really good result and with the process in the Development Team going in a good way we can look to next year now to compete for good results with this team.”
