Lorena Wiebes surges to European road race title

European Championships Road Race

Riding for the Dutch national team, Team DSM’s Lorena Wiebes stormed to sprint success in Munich this afternoon at the European games; claiming the continental title in the road race.

Taking on a 128 kilometre route which featured a few hills earlier in the day before a flat finish circuit in Munich, the Dutch team set out with a plan of going all-in for the win with Wiebes. Despite the best efforts from her Team DSM teammates Liane Lippert, Franziska Koch [both Germany] and Juliette Labous [France] who put in several attacks throughout the day; the Dutch team which included Floortje Mackaij and Charlotte Kool held it together for a fast finale. With Mackaij and Kool acting as final pilot riders for Wiebes, the lead out perfected at Team DSM stormed around the last hairpin turn before Wiebes slotted onto a fast approaching Italian lead out. Launching a powerful kick and throwing the bike to the line, Wiebes took the victory in a hotly contested photo finish.

Speaking after the finish Wiebes expressed: “As expected the Italian train came up late in the final kilometre. We were on the left and they were on the right and I jumped across to them after some strong work by the team, and Floortje and Charlotte in the finale. I then just gave it everything to the line. We really worked as a team and we had a really clear plan. The pressure was on today but I’ve had good practice at being the finisher with Team DSM so I just tried to stay calm. It’s special to take the win for the national team and win the jersey.”
