Martijn Tusveld 5th after big day in Giro mountain breakaway

Giro d'Italia

To reach tomorrow’s final rest day, the peloton had to take on the first stage in the Alps and a mountain test with three hard climbs in the finale which was proceeded by a flatter opening. With it looking like a good day for the breakaway to taste stage success, it was an incredibly fast and fierce start to the action; with attack after attack going clear before being brought back.

The team were incredibly active with almost everyone finding themselves in a move at some point. Thymen Arensman forced the pace over an uncategorised climb with just over 100 kilometres to go, dragging clear four other riders, while behind the elastic snapped in the peloton as Martijn Tusveld and Nico Denz joined him in the front group of around 20 riders. Working well together over the first climb, Tusveld found himself off the front on the following descent in a Dutch trio, before the second climb began immediately. There, Denz tried to disrupt the chase but an infernal pace was set and others bridged across to Tusveld. Nonetheless, Tusveld dug deep and rode at his own tempo, returning to the front five after an incredible descent.

Going onto the final climb the attacks started early at over 20 minutes to go and the group completely split to pieces. Once again, Tusveld rode within himself at his own pace, all the way to the line to take a very good fifth place – his first ever Grand Tour and World Tour top five finish.

“The plan today was to be in the break and it was great to be up the road with three of us,” explained Tusveld. “I could follow when things split on the descent and was then ahead in a group of three before others came to us. The last climb was not super tricky but there wasn’t a moment to take a breath as it was full-gas all day. Fifth is a super nice result for me here and I’m happy with how the form is.”
