Thymen Arensman takes strong 2nd place in final Giro TT

Giro d'Italia

The final day of racing at the Giro d’Italia saw the peloton take on a 17.4 kilometre long time trial around the streets of Verona, an almost identical route to the stage where the team had success in 2019, except this year’s edition added a few hundred metres to the climb.

Taking the course with respect, Alberto Dainese, Nico Denz, Chris Hamilton and Romain Combaud all made their way around the route completing their Giro in Verona. Martijn Tusveld would race the parcours, producing a good intermediate split before pushing on even further on the descent and flat finale, stopping the clock in 23 minutes and 55 seconds – an effort that would see him end the day in Xth place.

The last Team DSM rider down the start ramp was Thymen Arensman, with the young Dutchman charging out of the blocks with a good pacing plan to set a strong intermediate split and the only rider in the peloton to get remotely close to Sobrero, trailing the Italian by 14 seconds at that point. Taking the sinuous descent and flat, fast run in well, Arensman pushed all the way to the line, ending his effort in 22 minutes and 47 seconds – 22 seconds down on Sobrero. With all other riders eventually completing their efforts, Arensman would take a strong second place when the dust had settled.

“It was a tough course out there today and I gave everything I had and in the end second was the result,” explained Arensman. “I think I can be happy with it and it’s a nice result after three hard weeks of racing here. It’s a nice way to end a good Giro with the team.”

Team DSM coach Matt Winston added: “It was a good TT by Thymen today. It was nice to finish second and end the Giro in a really nice way. I think as a whole, as always in sport you have your ups and downs, but we kept bouncing back from our disappointments and getting some nice results. I think we can reflect on this Giro where we took a win, three second places and several other top ten finishes; so I think we can be really happy with how we’ve gone here and the teamwork that we’ve showed.”
