Henri Vandenabeele and Team DSM secure 3rd on GC at Giro Ciclistico d’Italia

Giro Ciclistico d'Italia

The final day of racing saw the bunch take on a predominantly flat 162 kilometre long parcours, albeit with some climbs littered in the middle of the day. It was a fast start to the racing before a group of nine riders got clear after 40 kilometres of action. It looked as if they would form the break of the day but approaching the climbs in the middle of the stage, their gap had fallen to only 20 seconds. Leon Heinschke and Gianmarco Garofoli both launched out of the peloton and tried to force another group clear but things came back together over the top. Eventually after another flurry of attacks, a trio broke clear.

The team all remained in the peloton, ensuring that third placed on GC Henri Vandenabeele made it to the finish successfully and unscathed. Despite their best efforts, the bunch was unable to catch the leading trio and they would go on to fight it out for the stage win. With no major changes at the finish, Vandenabeele was safe in the knowledge that he had secured a brilliant third place on GC, after an incredible week of teamwork by the Development program riders.

“Our goal for the race in general was to go for a nice GC result,” said Vandenabeele after the race. “Of course, I really wanted to win the Giro but before the race I said I would be happy with a podium. The guys protected me everyday so I was always really safe and in a perfect position for the key moments. I want to thank them for that because it was the first time I experienced something like this. The way we rode together here was amazing and on a really high level.”

Team DSM coach Bennie Lambregts added: “We thought that a break might have made it to the finish, which also ended up being the outcome of the day. The guys tried on the first climb to get away, with Leon and Gianmarco very active there but we couldn’t get away. Looking back on the race as a whole, I think we had some really good talks in the first few stages about how we work together. From stage five onwards the guys worked really well together and we were really impressive every day. The outcome of that is that we come away with a great third place from Henri. I think that is a compliment to the whole team; staff, riders, experts – everyone has done a great job to get us here. We can be proud of this result together.”
