Testing hilly TT opener in Itzulia

Itzulia Basque Country

Itzulia Basque Country got underway this afternoon with an incredibly testing 14 kilometre long time trial around the streets of Bilbao. With a two kilometre climb almost immediately from the start house, followed by a descent and flat roads before a stinging kick up to the line; it was sure to be a hard effort.

Martijn Tusveld paced his ride well around the course, stopping the clock in 18 minutes and 24 seconds, moving into a provisional seventh place as he crossed the line. Likewise, Mark Donovan impressed on the hilly parcours, besting his team-mate Tusveld by five seconds with a time of 18 minutes and 19 seconds at the finish. However, the best Team DSM time of the day though would be set by Ilan Van Wilder who rode a very measured effort over the rolling terrain, stopping the clock for a very respectable time of 18 minutes and eight seconds.

With today’s time trial behind them, tomorrow will see the peloton take on a rolling stage from Zalla to Sestao with a punchy finale.

“I think I did a solid time trial out there today, the feeling was great,” explained Van Wilder at the finish. “Without having raced many time trials recently then we can be quite satisfied with that. We’ll see what we can do in the coming stages as a team.”

Team DSM coach Michiel Elijzen added: “It was a hard time trial today, which had two climbs on the route. All of our riders did a decent performance with Ilan the best of us at the finish line. Overall, it was a good start to the race for us and from tomorrow onwards, we will try to be in the attacks to go for nice stage results.”
