Oscar Onley on the attack, Marius Mayrhofer claims 8th on GC

Kreiz Breizh Elites

The final day of racing at Kreiz Breizh Elites saw the bunch take on a 172 kilometre long parcours from Guingamp to Rostrenen, which once again featured several short but sharp hills. It was a quick start to the race but unlike previous stages, the breakaway managed to establish after only ten kilometres, with Oscar Onley riding well to make make it into the eight rider group.

Working well together, Onley’s break managed to build their advantage to over three minutes but the peloton kept them close and didn’t allow it to grow out any further. As the kilometres ticked down, the time gap began to dwindle too and with 40 kilometres to go Onley was caught on the hilly circuit. The rest of the team worked well to keep Marius Mayrhofer safe before the finale, taking up a good position in the bunch as the rain began to fall. With the late attacker taking the stage win, Mayrhofer crossed the line in the reduced peloton – a result that sees him claim a solid eighth place on GC for the team.

“We were only with five riders today as Tim didn’t start the stage but the team worked very hard to look after me,” explained Mayrhofer. “We had Oscar in the break which meant we didn’t have to work in the peloton. It was a tough finale and I’m happy to finish it off with a solid position in the GC for the team.”

Team DSM coach Bennie Lambregts added: “Oscar made it into the breakaway for us today which was really good. I also have to give my compliments to him because after his crash on the opening day, it shows how mentally strong he is as a young 18-year-old to be able to do that. The race was pretty well controlled today and unfortunately the leader of the race crashed out, so Riwal took over at the head of the peloton. There were lots of attacks in the end with one guy managing to get a small gap while Marius finished in 16th in the bunch for us, ending the race in eighth place on GC. Overall, the teamwork from the guys this week was good but there are still some things we will take away and learn from our time here.”
