Lorena Wiebes sprints to Stage 2 victory at Lotto Thuringen Ladies Tour

Lotto Thuringen Ladies Tour 2021

Lorena Wiebes sprinted to victory on the second stage of the Lotto Thuringen Ladies Tour rounding out another strong stage for the team.

The race had a number of attacks from solo riders during the course of the day along the hilly 125.1 kilometre route, which kept the peloton working well together to keep the gap under control.

Liane Lippert had a strong showing and picked up a number of bonus seconds moving her up to sixth overall, coming second in both the second intermediate sprint and the fourth QOM within the last 15 kilometres. After strong work throughout the stage the team kept the pressure on coming into the final kilometres back into Gera, with Wiebes taking an emphatic victory over the finishing straight cobbles.

“Today was a bit of an easier stage than yesterday,” Wiebes said after completing her podium duties. “We controlled the race and staying in front the whole race and then with the lead-out we did a really good job getting into a strong position.

“The team placed me coming into the important last two corners where I could start my sprint in a great position. It gives us great confidence going into the coming days.”

“The day was nervous but pretty OK for us overall,” explained Team DSM Women’s program coach Albert Timmer. “We were there when it was important at all the crucial points to make it easier for the girls.

“They worked really well together today then in the final for the sprint they really nailed it. We had a plan and they delivered it really well which was seen with Lorena winning with some bike lengths. We can be happy and satisfied how it went with Liane also taking some seconds out on the road making it a successful day.”
