Tough day of racing at hilly Trofeo Piva

Trofeo Piva

Development Team DSM were in action today for the first U23 race of the year – Trofeo Piva. Taking place on a brutally hard circuit around Col San Martino, featuring numerous stinging climbs, it was set to be 171 kilometres of very tough racing.

From early into the day a group of two riders escaped and built up an advantage of around four minutes. As the kilometres ticked by, it became a race of attrition with riders dropping from the peloton on each lap. Heading into the final 30 kilometres Leon Heinschke and Hannes Wilksch were both present in the drastically reduced bunch, before the attacks flew again. Unfortunately the team weren’t able to follow the strong pace at the front from the new attacks, with Heinschke ultimately the first rider across the line at the finish.

Tomorrow sees the team in action again at another hilly Italian race – Giro del Belvedere.

“It was a really hard race out there today,” explained Heinschke. “The guys did their best in the beginning of the day to position me into the crucial moments of the race. Later on the race was controlled behind the breakaway and the guys always did a good lead out for me going onto the climb and onto the descents. With around three or four laps to go a really big group went away that unfortunately we weren’t in. We needed to then bring that back but we just couldn’t manage to do it, and the gap was always around 30 seconds. On the last climb it then completely exploded with Hannes giving me a good lead out onto it, and we just tried to get the best we could out of the day.”

Team DSM coach Bennie Lambregts added: “It was a really hard race today. Three or four kilometres before the last steep climb, Hannes did a really good pull to bring Leon back and almost close the gap to the front chasing group of 17 riders. Then on the climb after the effort Leon just didn’t have the legs to be able to bridge to that group on the steep slopes. Earlier in the race Oscar did a really good job to keep the guys in a good position, while Gianmarco and Leo also did their best on the tricky parcours. The trust is there between Leon and Hannes, so with a bit more luck then we believe we can go for a really nice result tomorrow.”
