Strong team display sees Søren Kragh Andersen end Tour of Denmark 4th on GC

PostNord Danmark Rundt - Tour of Denmark

A short but sharp 126 kilometre route awaited the peloton this afternoon for the final stage at the Tour of Denmark, with several climbs in the opening half of the day before five complete laps of the famous local finish circuit around Velje; featuring the ascent of Kiddesvej.

It was a fierce start to proceedings with a big fight to make the breakaway before an eight rider move eventually went clear, with all Team DSM riders in the bunch. Focus remained on staying safe and save energy for the tough finale. Heading into the last 40 kilometres the team were well represented in the reduced peloton with Leon Heinschke then Casper Pedersen setting a strong tempo to further thin things down; meaning Søren Kragh Andersen and birthday-boy Tobias Lund Andresen were present in the bunch of around 40.

Despite pre-race predictions from many that there would be lots of attacks, the race leader’s team set a strong enough tempo to discourage any moves and the day came down to a showdown up the last ascent. After being well positioned by Lund Andresen, Kragh Andersen put in a stinging attack on the steep gradients, cresting the climb in the lead. However, he was left on the front going into the final 300 metres and some riders surged from behind, with Kragh Andersen emptying the tank for a good sixth place; a result which sees him take fourth on GC for the team.

“Today was the queen stage of the Tour of Denmark and it went really good,” explained Kragh Andersen. “For myself, I was very happy with the performance in the end and thanks to the team, it was a great effort. They really committed to me during the day and gave me their full support. I think we raced well and progressed over the week. Today I went all-in for the team on the last climb and we reached out for the victory. We missed it but I’m proud of how we raced and progressed in the week. I think that’s given us some more motivation for the next races.”

Team DSM coach Roy Curvers added: “We were fully dedicated to support Søren today to try and go for the stage win. We closed the break early in the hope that would cause some chaos, but there was still a lot control in the bunch. The guys then set up Søren perfectly for the final. He went all out but couldn’t distance the top GC guys who in the end out sprinted him to the line. I’m happy with the dedication of the guys today and proud that they all went all-in.”
