Max Poole 5th in punchy final stage, Lorenzo Milesi animates the break, Team DSM end with double GC top 10

Sazka Tour

The final day of racing at the Sazka Tour saw another hard day in the saddle awaiting the riders, with a lot of climbing at the start of the stage before a flatter plateau finished off with a punchy closing circuit. It was an aggressive start to the stage before a large group of 13 went clear on one of the climbs, with Lorenzo Milesi riding strongly to make the move for Development Team DSM.

Back in the peloton, the rest of the team rallied around Oscar Onley and Max Poole who were both in contention for a top ten on GC, with Onley heading also into the final day with a five second lead in the young riders competition. As the day progressed the break built up a maximum advantage of four minutes, but the peloton didn’t let it go out too far as there were a couple of riders dangerous in GC.

Heading towards the final circuits the break started to attack each other with a duo, that would go on to fight for the win, going clear. After being well supported by the rest of the team, Onley and Poole joined Milesi as the GC group increased the pace in the closing laps. Over the final ascent the pace was high and the group split over the top, with Onley caught behind as they charged to the finish. Poole delivered a brilliant turn of speed to take fifth on the stage while Onley fought to 18th. The results mean that the Development program end the week with a superb double top ten on GC, as Onley claims seventh overall with Poole tenth; after some strong riding by everyone.

“Today the plan was for me to try to be in the breakaway and for the other guys to help Max and Oscar as much as possible,” explained Milesi. “The break was quite strong but the gap wasn’t allowed to grow too big. In the final, a small group with the GC riders that included Oscar and Max came across and I helped as much as I could. In the final lap it was then just down to the legs and the guys got some nice results.”
