Having spent five successful seasons with the team from 2012 to 2016, where he claimed two Monument wins at Milano-Sanremo and Paris-Roubaix, John “returns home” to Team DSM as of the 2022 season; something that he is relishing.
Bringing his wealth of experience, the vocal yet considered John is looking forward to helping the team’s raft of young talent make the next steps in their career as he himself develops his role as a road captain.
With this approach, John thinks that not having the pressure of always being the team’s designated finisher as he has in recent years, will also conversely help him to reach a higher level again and help the team perform to a better level.
Looking ahead, John wants to simply enjoy riding his bike at the highest level of the sport.
Away from the bike, John loves spending as much time as possible with his family and you can often find him in the kitchen, trying out new recipes, although he jokingly admits that he leaves the baking to his wife as it’s not his “area of expertise”.
An adventurer at heart, holidays in the Degenkolb family can often see John out diving in the seas of Thailand – the place where he did his diving license 10 years ago – or other exotic destinations throughout the world!
