Matt joined Team DSM in 2019 as a race coach and has been part of the team’s successes at the Tour de France and Giro d’Italia in recent year. Before that, during an eight-year stint at British Cycling, Matt coached the junior national team to four world titles and eight European medals before stepping into his most recent role as Head Coach for the UK-based ONE Pro Cycling Team.
A selfless, focused guy, Matt’s biggest motivator is seeing his team reach their goals. “I take a lot out of seeing the athletes I am working with achieving their individual and team goals and then seeing their reaction to this. That’s what it’s all about.”
He considers his biggest career achievement as seeing ten of his athletes develop into both the men’s and women’s WorldTour, and more personally, completing the Ronde van Vlaanderen sportive in eight hours with minimal training.
A driven person, if Matt wants something he does all he can to make it happen. On his day’s off you can find him out and about on his bike, on his local club run and if he gets lucky with a good book, all things are pushed aside until the final page is turned. Aside from cycling, Matt also enjoys watching other sports such as football and cricket.
