Hailing from Bendigo in Australia, birthplace of fellow Team DSM rider Chris [Hamilton], Patrick combined road and track in his junior career, claiming the road and time trial championship double in 2019, alongside winning the Australian Team Pursuit championship on the boards in 2021.

2022 sees him make the move over to Europe full-time as he joins the team’s Development program, an opportunity that he’s relishing, moving into the team’s Keep Challenging Center.

“All of the facilities and having access to the Keep Challenging Center really intrigued me. I’ve seen a few videos and it just looks awesome. It will be a transition for me moving from Australia and that really stood out for me as a factor.”

As a youngster Aussie Rules was Patrick’s main sport but after his dad bought a bike for his own fitness, Patrick and his brother decided they wanted to try that too. Getting his own bike on his tenth birthday, he started riding it more, competing in races and it “snowballed” from there.

Despite being competitive at heart, Patrick can switch off too and he still gets a lot of enjoyment from riding his bike, like he did at ten years old.

“Since the pandemic hit and there have been less race opportunities for us her in Australia, I’ve just enjoyed getting out and going riding.”

In almost stereotypical fashion, Patrick has a laid-back and pragmatic attitude to life, something that has helped him so far in his career and something that he hopes continues as he looks to the future.

“I do like always just getting that little bit better. Not only in cycling but also in all the other things I do, through school and things like that. I like to get the most out of each day. I like cycling and riding my bike, so to do that as a profession for a number of years would be pretty awesome too in my eyes.”

Away from the sport, you can find Patrick “taking up a new hobby every other week”, chilling with friends or practicing his Dutch on Duolingo.
