Lorena Wiebes makes it back-to-back wins on stage 5

The Women's Tour

Lorena Wiebes sprinted to victory on stage 5 of the Women’s Tour making it back-to-back wins at the race for Team DSM after her sprint win on day four. Much like the day previous, the stage came down to a bunch sprint after a controlled day from the team over the 95.4 kilometre parcours.

Motivated by yesterday’s win, Team DSM headed into stage 5 with a similar outlook given the largely flat parcours, keeping the GC placings in check and riding for Wiebes in the finale in the knowledge of her being one of the fastest finishers at the race.

The stage featured a long solo breakaway by Hayley Simmonds at the front of the race all day, building a lead of over three minutes thirty seconds at its most, but once the peloton picked up the pace her lead soon started to fall. The team helped set the pace to close the gap as well as keeping Wiebes out of trouble before turning their attentions to preparing for a sprint finish once the race was back together in the final 15 kilometres.

A late QOM wasn’t enough to cause any splits and the race headed into the finish in Clacton where Wiebes finished off another day of strong teamwork with victory, while second placed on GC Juliette Labous maintained her overall position heading into tomorrow’s final day of racing.

“We had everything under control today, one rider was in the front and we put Liane in the chase, she did a really good job,” explained stage winner Wiebes after the finish. “With the lead-out we came through a bit too early and almost got boxed in, but I was able to find my way and finish the teamwork off to take the win.”

Team DSM coach Albert Timmer added: “It’s great to get another win today and overall it was a very similar situation to yesterday. The fight for bonus seconds during the day was on and it was good that there was a break up the road as that helped take some pressure off. With Liane we started to chase behind and controlled the bunch. Then once the break was caught we worked towards the sprint again for Lorena. We started a bit early but Lorena managed that on a good way to anticipate and scores the second win for us here this week.”
