Team DSM and Lorena Wiebes bounce back superbly with stage 2 victory at Women’s Tour

Women's Tour

After three wins back-to-back at RideLondon Classique last week, Team DSM and Lorena Wiebes continued their incredible run of form today, making it four wins in five race days after a resounding sprint victory on the second day of action at the Women’s Tour this afternoon; showing great resilience after stage one’s disappointment.

Unlike yesterday’s rain and wind, the peloton were greeted with some unusual British sun and favourable riding conditions, and on the predominantly flat parcours the team set out with the clear goal of controlling the race and setting up Wiebes for the finale. It was a steady afternoon of action before eventually one rider hit out solo and went clear but the team were always in control and helped to slowly bring things back heading into the finale. More counter attacks flew and a crash disrupted the chase which unfortunately saw Leah Kirchmann and Pfeiffer Georgi held up, but yet again the team regrouped superbly. After being helped by Megan Jastrab, Franziska Koch brought Wiebes into a good position going under the flamme rouge, keeping the pace high at the front before expertly handing over to Charlotte Kool who began the lead out. Kool went all-in before flicking her elbow at 200 metres to go, where Wiebes unleashed a dominant sprint, galloping clear of the opposition and ultimately winning the stage by several bike lengths in Harlow; taking the Women’s program’s 11th win of the season.

“Today was not a really hard stage and there was quite a good speed in the bunch,” explained a smiling Wiebes at the finish. “We had no problems today, we were good together in the front at the intermediate sprints and over the QOMs. At six kilometres to go there was a crash and only Franzi and I were in the small peloton after it but luckily Megan and Charlotte came back. We were a bit stuck in the middle of the road before the sprint so I found my own way out a bit and in the last straight the girls found me again and we did a really nice lead out; they set me up perfectly. We can be super proud of ourselves and we’re looking forward to the next stages now.”
